A Failed Attempt to Defend The Doctrine of Purgatory

My blog site has been a favorite venue of detractors trying to (hopelessly) defend their erroneous faith which can never be proven Biblical. I felt like laughing on top of my voice when I read a portion of their comments and defenses which follows:

Reply:

Purgatory is biblical. It comes from latin; Purgationem Peccatorum.

Heb 1:3 “qui cum sit splendor gloriae et figura substantiae eius portansque omnia verbo virtutis suae PURGATIONEM PECCATORUM faciens sedit ad dexteram Maiestatis in excelsis”

Translation:

Heb 1:3 “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself PURGED OUR SINS, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;”

By merely looking at the verse and using 5% of the 100% capacity of our brains to discern and understand things, you can easily notice that the person who posted his defense in favor of the Catholic Church’s doctrine of purgatory is inane, insane!

Does the Latin term purgationem peccatorum” mean purgatory? Translated into English, it is “purged our sins,” not purgatory! And who purged our sins? According to the verse, “He” referring to Christ, purged our sins. Aren’t you implying now, whoever you are, that Christ is purgatory? Oh, come on!

And notice the verse that says, after purging our sins “He sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.” Will that imply now that purgatory is in the throne of God? Come on! Catholic doctrine defines purgatory as a place between heaven and hell so it cannot be sitting in the throne of God.

Take note that it is the Council of Trent of the Catholic Church, not the Bible, that asserted the doctrine of purgatory!

The greatest of the Malayan race, Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal, in his famous book, Noli Me Tangere, said categorically after reading the whole Bible that there is no purgatory in the Bible! Mind you, Dr. Rizal speaks more than 22 languages. He surely is knowledgeable of Latin and Spanish. And he said purgatory is not in the Bible as Rizal is neither inane nor insane.

The Catholic doctrine of purgatory is not founded on Biblical teachings. The alleged mention of praying for the dead in the book of Maccabeus, (this book is not part of the Bible until the Catholic Church included it in 1546) does not in any manner imply that there is a purgatory!

Praying for the dead was never a part of the Christian doctrine! The Lord Jesus Christ, or anyone of His apostles, never taught any idea of it!

I CORINTHIANS 4:6 (REVISED STANDARD VERSION)

I have applied all this to myself and Apol’los for your benefit, brethren, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another.

The word purgatory cannot be found in the writings of the apostles nor have the slightest idea of it!

If Christians are to be purged from their sins, it has to be in this life and not in the hereafter. It is through the atoning power of the death of Christ that we are purged from our sins, not in purgatory.

HEBREWS 10:10-12

10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God;

ISAIAH 53:3-5

3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

“and with his stripes we are healed” not by purgatory!

I CORINTHIANS 15:3

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures;

The sufferings of Christ and the offering of His body is sufficient to purge our sins!

  1. To God Be the Glory!!

No one can defend that belief of Purgatory because it is not true & beside Dr. Jose Rizal was knowledgeable enough to say that it is not true & it is not written in the bible..

Bro. Eli Soriano you truly open my eyes on the true Gospel of God. Keep up the good work!! May God bless you always!!

    • If I interpret the Bible to myself, I can also make another religion, adding to thousands which sprouted per self interpretation. I will tell you if I get there or you will know if you will go ahead of me….

What is the meaning of PURGE and what is done in PURGATOR??? Don’t you want to have a second chance which is generously given…Okay…better if only two…HELL and FACEBOOK! Okay?

I agree with you. There are many people who privately interpreted the bible to their own self aggrandizement. Take for example Quiboloy and Manalo they own palatial homes and properties that can be inherited by their families.

    • Jose Rizal knew only his politics and not the bible. Those who are most knowledgeable about the bible is the “magesterium” of the Catholic Church. It is so because the bible is the official religious book of the Catholic Church. It can be proven by history and through the apostolic succession.

      • Hahaha! It’s you agan Odan. Still braging about your catholic doctrines? Read the blog and when you’re done I have 3 words for you.

        IN YOUR FACE!

        To God be the Glory!

      • You are clearly ignorant. I request you to stop posting such ignorance because you’re misleading fools such as yourself. Fools need wise men to guide them to the right path, not fools to guide another fool to their graveyard.

If I may ask, did Jose Rizal get involved in Politics? Is he a Politician? If your answer is yes, then show everyone here a proof or evidence in history that Jose Rizal is a politician. You have not studied your History class well. I advise you to go back in elementary school, because Jose Rizal is our national hero, and this is basic knowledge, yet you show such ignorance.

  2. People who believes in purgatory are fools. Rizal a genius scholar was very sure that there is no purgatory in the old and new testament because he read the entire bible. I really appreciate the hardships of Dr. Rizal in reading the bible. No doubt that he is our national hero. Rizal fought the Spaniards until the last breath of his life because He knew that the religion that they brought was not of God. .

  3. what a foolish member!!! who is trying defend his leader who does not able to protect thier members, instead are hiding from the the skirs of thier members… open your eyes member of this congregation… and listen and read with our rightful and sensible leader!!!

    • I totally agree. They are covering up the religious perspective of his works by diverting our attention to the political and sociological aspect of the story. Also, if I remember it correctly, in his novels, the friars are actually the ones who are doing more horrific acts than the Spanish generals.

  4. The truth as they say hurts.. but eventually sets us FREE from wrong beliefs… I agree with this.. -zero_cool, Philippines

  5. God is good! He opens the eyes of those who take heed to His invitation to dine with Him. Thanks God for Bro. Eli who speaks the plain truth, pure word of God. Faith cometh by hearing & hearing the word of God. One can only discuss things rightfully if he has the knowledge of the full truth, documented & with firm evidence before accusing someone. Not only in the case of Bro. Eli but in any given situation… I remain & always side with the truth whatever it may cause!

  6. whoever that reply is from, I really think he had a rude awakening coming, worse, I think deep inside he knows Brother Eli speaks the truth found in the Bible, but he is holding on to the tatters of his religious belief, no matter how slippery its foundation are. See, when you do not want to let go of something, you are grasping at straws just to hold on to it, no matter how futile.

Whoever you are, my two-cents’ worth is, please pray to God that you may be led to the correct conclusion on what to believe and who to listen to. It is not worth it to hold on to pride and the denial that you grew up in the wrong religion, I repeat, it is not worth it when your salvation is on the stakes.

Thanks be to GOD, Brother Eli, for everything!

  7. Bro. Eli, this is the absolute reason why you are persecuted by other religious denomination, great and small, because You are telling absolute TRUTH. Thanks be to GOD for that!

I’d been reading quite sometime a catholic blogs and yes, they defended hopelessly their doctrine about purgatory with might as if it was real. I also do not understand if they are lack of education to distinguish the noun from the verb. But their were scholars and educated people, some of them were lawyers. As you had mentioned, for Catholic it was a place where souls go, but in the scripture is a verb “purges” mean wash out, cleanse, eliminate, eradicate etc.

In this blog, I hope catholics’ eyes will be opened after reading this.

    • Wisdom is a deep understanding and realization of people, things, events or situations, resulting in the ability to choose or act or inspire to consistently produce the optimum results with a minimum of time, energy or thought…

I can Google the things that he posted here. Does that mean I’m full of wisdom too?
Come on. Use your common sense, why live a life arguing doctrines when you, as a Christian, have been mandated to Preach The Gospel?

THE MANDATE OF CHRIST FOR ALL BELIEVERS

      Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-20; Acts 1:8

Preaching the gospel to every creature is Christ’s mandate for all believers and our primary assignment in this world. “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (Matthew 28:19-20).

He never said “go ye into all the world and specialize in music, worship, prophecies, healing, deliverance, prosperity and teaching of doctrine.”
The subject of propagating the gospel is a prime importance to God and His church 2Peter 3:9; Galatians 3:80. It can therefore not be over-emphasized 2Peter 1:12-13).

      • @delamorte

Quoted: “Use your common sense, why live a life arguing doctrines when you, as a Christian, have been mandated to Preach The Gospel?”

Biblically speaking, arguing has been a part of preaching the true Gospel. Arguing comes when detractors will try to disprove it. (Acts 6:1-10, Acts 9:29)

Like for an instance, the Bible is saying not to worship idols or make any graven image, versus the catholic doctrine of kneeling before them. The same goes with purgatory. You can never find anything written and taught by any of the Apostles about purgatory. Now, how would you reconcile those issues when detractors will try to disprove the teachings written in the Bible?

I think you don’t know what you are saying..

  8. Once again, as always, Bro. Eli delivers such an eye-opening account of biblical truths to expose the unscriptural tenet of the Roman Catholic church on purgatory. Dr. Jose Rizal had done the same thing in his time and his valiant exposition of the erroneous religious dogmas of the Spaniards cost him his death. Kudos to both Bro. Eli and Dr. Rizal for standing for the truth and defending it no matter what the cost! To God be the glory!

  9. Nobody will go to purgatory.
    John 5:28-29
Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

  10. My friends, FAITH IS WHAT YOU BELIEVE! It really is! If you believed that your donation will be returned to you more than enough (Siksik, Liglig at Umaapaw), IT WILL! FAITH IS WHAT YOU BELIEVE! If you don’t believe in it, IT WON’T WORK! If you believe in it but it didn’t happened, then you will be discouraged, likewise, if you don’t believe in it but it happens, you’ll call it a miracle! Its just a matter of choices!

If you believed that I am wrong, then my words are nothing, likewise, I AM RIGHT! And I became Genius! And I will look good to every one because I know something, then you will start to donate something for me because of it!

Bro. Eli, once spoke on a TV program about 20 years ago, that you will be saved at the time of judgement by the purity of your heart (kalinisan ng iyong kalooban), no matter what religion or faith you believed or involved with. BRO. ELI’s WORDS IS ENOUGH TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING! Purity of your heart is your salvation.

Purgatory is not an issue. If it does exists or not, it should be your call (simply you choose to believe in it… or not). If you love your family, stay with them and enjoy them while you can. That matters than stuffing your brains some things to think about – which will lead you to forgetting your family and yourself that you have a life too to be run by you as the master of your faith.

Why bother raise issues and talk about it. ALL OF THE POEPLE SHOULD BE DOING SOMETHING TO HAVE A CLEAN HEART, IT IS THE ONLY KEY TO EVERYONE’S SALVATION. Bro. Eli says this and I believed on what he have said many years ago.

I know, I don’t have the voice in your organization. But if you believe on my words, FAITH IS WHAT YOU BELIEVE!

    • “BRO. ELI’s WORDS IS ENOUGH TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING! Purity of your heart is your salvation.”

You sure are a big fan. wew. good for you.
and by the way, if you’re familiar with the book called “Bible”, you will find the true path of salvation. He is called Jesus Christ. Believing that He is the Son of God whom He sent to die on the cross to pay for our sins because we cannot do it ourselves, and having a personal relationship with God, is the true path to salvation.

That is why we have been mandated to preach the Gospel because good deeds will never be able to save those who haven’t heard of Christ.

Do I have to quote the Bible on this one, bro?

      • Brother, it seems you are like Bro. Eli Soriano. You are making a point without using the whole scenario. Lawakan lang po ang pag-iisip. React to my point, not to the phrase or sentence of what I have said.

        On my paragraph:

“…that you will be saved at the time of judgement by the purity of your heart (kalinisan ng iyong kalooban), no matter what religion or faith you believed or involved with. BRO. ELI’s WORDS IS ENOUGH TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING! Purity of your heart is your salvation.”

expresses a universal meaning, but you are narrowing it to one. It seems your heart is not pure because you are using me to make-up your own point. I CAN NOT ACCEPT YOU ARE USING MY KNOWLEDGE FOR YOUR OWN PURPOSE!

In what you are doing, more and more people like you will create walls to other people in terms of religion/belief. This will tend people not to help each other wholeheartedly, and will force your fellow followers to help yourselves – excluding the people who really needs help who is not your fellow followers. That is not what Jesus preaches in his disciples. That is not the message in the bible!

The Bible speaks simply: “LOVE GOD” and “LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR”.

My friend, WAKE UP! Do not use the name of the Lord for your sake.

You should not use someone’s phrase or sentence when making a point. It will make you a genius, just like Bro. ELI. But to the intelligent people who knows what you are doing – they will think that your brains are hollow.

You should not quote the Bible if you haven’t got a pure heart.

  11. Bro.Eli cn be straight forward with his answer with humor or sarcastic but hey, its dats the truth then we shud accept it…even if it hurts! thanks, Bro.Eli for ur reading!

i have some questions: are these true? the second is a series u cn check it out thanks!

  12. I pitty these people who says this blog is annoying. But since they are resistant in accepting the truth and opt to stay in wrong teachings they would really react this way.

A thumbs up to those readers who understands this article. Their understanding is truly opened by the mercy and help of the Holy Spirit.

For those who are not sure, just ask your questions. The Holy Bible will surely answer all your hesitations.

Thanks be to God for the understanding that he gave unto bro Eli Soriano we were able to realize this triuth which was not taught to us before. May God take good care of you.

  13. Truly it is a very wrong doctrine in the Catholicism, of having such a notion in believing Purgatory. Where in the world they have the guts (especially those members whom they do not 100% know what they are defending) to defend this kind rotting doctrine that was embedded in their faith? I am pretty much sure that no one, even the pope, can negate what Bro. Eli explained, and I’m very thankful that through Bro. Eli, I left catholicism and accepted the true doctrines of Jesus Christ, and now with GOD’s help, fulfilling and living with it. Truly, and with confidence that I can say, my preacher is The Most Sensible Preacher of Our Time, sent by GOD to enlighten the minds of the people in this world of perils, before He (Jesus) comes back with judgment. All praises, glory and honor be unto the GOD of Abraham!
    🙂

  14. I am ashamed to have that former belief in purgatory. I just figured, Filipinos commend Jose Rizal for his works of patriotism but seem to ignore his Biblical investigation. Why don’t Catholics feel disgraced by the Catholic priests in Rizal’s time? (and we can even go as far back as the murderous “Holy Crusades”) Rizal’s quotes about nationalism are well recognized, but his statement about the inexistence of purgatory in the Bible is not as widely acknowledged. I hope Filipinos, and all the Catholics in the world for that matter, would realize the lies preached by misleading religions.

    • ** THE FOLLOWING VERSES SPEAK OF JESUS CHRIST:

      John 1:1-2 (NKJV)

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.

      ** THE WORD (JESUS) WAS WITH GOD SINCE ETERNITY;
& THE WORD WAS ALSO A GOD

** THEN, THE WORD WAS MANIFESTED IN THE FLESH…

      John 1:14 (KJV)

14And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

      Hebrews 10:5 (NKJV)

5 Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: “ Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, But a body You have prepared for Me.

** THE PROPHESY IN THE OLD TESTAMENT:

      Isaiah 7:14

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

    • Jeny says:

It is also not written in the Bible that Jesus is God but I believe faithfully that He is!!!

      Reply:

It is not written also in the bible the word purgatory… but do you believe there is? How about MCGI it is not written in the bible… but is MCGI the church in the bible?

      • @Odan Matig-a:

YOU ARE A PURE FOLLY! You don’t even care to read the verses given above..

YOU ARE A NON-BELIEVER OF THE BIBLE. Therefore, no matter what Christ teaches, everything is in vain to you. And so you try to capitalize the idea of Jeny which is false.

I really say YOU ARE A DRUNKARD MAN… your mind is overflowing with lies and inventions.

EVERYTHING OF CATHOLIC TEACHINGS are pure inventions.. DO YOU HAVE DISCERNMENT? Definitely not a bit…

      • I remember one day, one of our youth president in our parish ask our priest, “Where can you find in the bible the word purgatory? Or what verse”. The priest took a long time to answer then finally replied “let me ask someone else (the bishop I believe or someone of higher decree). I think it’s in Isaiah, there’s a verse there that says about it.”

A priest who doesnt know the reference of one of the fundamental doctrines of the catholic faith. (I Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear)

        Revelation 20:12 (KJV)

12And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to THEIR WORKS.

The dead will be judged if they will be saved according to their works, not according to what other people did for them through prayers that catholics offer which they do every ‘all souls day’, 9 days after person’s death, 40 days, “alay sa mga patay”/offerings for the dead during a mass, etc.

We knew this very well, because we ourselves were once blinded by the catholic beliefs and traditions.

      • They do these prayer offerings for the souls that are in purgatory so that they will be cleansed and eventually go to heaven…

    • maybe you read the whole bible to say that, but unfortunately you didn’t understant it,
“John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. “, “Joh 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and tabernacled among us. And we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and of truth. ”
since the Word is Christ so by substitution “John 1:1 In the beginning was the Christ, and the Christ was with God, and the Christ was God. ”
      gets?🙂

  15. Mr. Eliseo Soriano asked:

Does the Latin term “purgationem peccatorum” mean purgatory?

    Reply:

I don’t know if Mr. Eli Soriano fully understand my answer. It is only a “one liner” and he made it difficult for him to understand. In my reply I said; “Purgatory is biblical. It comes from latin; Purgationem Peccatorum.” Mr. Eli Soriano is jumping the gun on me… he said; “Translated into English, it is “purged our sins,” not purgatory!” He is wrong in his interpretation. What I mean is that; purgatory comes from the latin bible which says; “purged our sins”. Purgatory in grammar is a word in a derive form. The word comes from the latin bible. The word is interpreted in catholic theology as a “state” or the situation of the souls of the dead whose righteousness are stained with only a venial sin. Purgatory in layman’s language is a place for cleansing of the soul.

Mr. Eli Soriano opined and asked:

According to the verse, “He” referring to Christ, purged our sins. Aren’t you implying now, whoever you are, that Christ is purgatory? Oh, come on!

    Reply:

You are correct! The word “he” refers to Christ and he is the purger of our sins when he died on the cross and of the dead whose souls are temporarily in purgatory. The purging of sins by Christ are done twice; in this life and the afterlife.

Furthermore I am not implying that “Christ is purgatory”. That is your opinion… and I believe that’s how you understand my answer which says; “Purgatory is biblical. It comes from latin; Purgationem Peccatorum.” You even high-lighted part of chap. 16 in James Cardinal Gibbons’ book that it’s a “middle state of temporary punishment” and yet you insist on digging your own hole.

Mr. Eli Soriano opined and asked:

And notice the verse that says, after purging our sins “He sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.” Will that imply now that purgatory is in the throne of God? Come on!

    Reply:

    Excerpt of Heb. 1:3 says; ….. when he had by himself PURGED OUR SINS, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

The first purging is “by himself” on the cross and the second is when he sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; He will be sitting in judgment in his throne in heaven of the poor souls in purgatory.

The souls in purgatory are prisoners because of their sins. In judgment Christ is in heaven.

    Mr. Eli Soriano opined:

Catholic doctrine defines purgatory as a place between heaven and hell so it cannot be sitting in the throne of God.

    Reply:

I’m asking you; where is that Catholic Doctrine? You already quoted James Cardinal Gibbons about the meaning of purgatory and still you keep on deviating away from his opinion. This is a clear manipulation to mislead your followers.

    • im sorry to say this but I believe it is you who are misled Mr. Odan. Bro. Eli, using the Bible and Dr. Jose Rizal’s novel clearly justifies that purgatory is unBiblical and believing on such teaching is insane.

isnt doctrine mean teaching? if purgatory is not a doctrine of yours, why so eager to defend it?

    • It appears that you have so many things in your mind that you want to share. To clear things out where you will have thousands of live audiences locally and abroad – and of course to give justice of which you think injustice had been done, i suggest that you set for a formal discussion (such as debate) with Bro. Eli…

    • Whatever explanation you give or however you explain the word purgatory it is still a VERY BIG LIE coming from the catholic old chest of doctrines. This big lie of yours is a way for catholic priest to collect a large amount of money from people who are ignorant in the words of God. I know people who pays a large amount money just to remove their DEAD love ones from suffering allegedly in purgatory beacuse of his GREAT SINS committed when he was still alive, What a great lie!

    • Mr. Odan Matig-a says:

“I don’t know if Mr. Eli Soriano fully understand my answer. It is only a “one liner” and he made it difficult for him to understand. In my reply I said; “Purgatory is biblical. It comes from latin; Purgationem Peccatorum.” Mr. Eli Soriano is jumping the gun on me… he said; “Translated into English, it is “purged our sins,” not purgatory!” HE IS WRONG IN HIS INTERPRETATIONS.”

Do you mean to say mister that translators of New Testament is wrong in translating ng word
“Purgationem Peccatorum” as “PURGED OUR SINS” and it should be “purgatory” then? Are you trying to be more knowledgeable than Bible Scholars? As far as I can see, Bro Eli doesn’t interpret anything. If you’re having problem with the terminological translation, then you are barking at the wrong tree.

      Then you said..

“The word comes from the latin bible. The word is interpreted in catholic theology as a “state” or the situation of the souls of the dead whose righteousness are stained with only a venial sin.”

You admitted that catholic theology “interpreted” the word to be an state or situations of the souls of the dead. Do you care to dig deeper into these so-called “interpretations” if that is Biblical? Please, dont treat an interpreation to be a fact. Your Catholic theology interpretation is the subject of scrutiny here it shouldnt be the basis for your argument. You’ll end up into circular reasoning by doing that.

      Then you said..

You are correct! The word “he” refers to Christ and he is the purger of our sins when he died on the cross and of the dead whose souls are temporarily in purgatory. The purging of sins by Christ are done twice; in this life and the afterlife.

You just had confirmed that what Bro Eli said is correct. Now, what is the weight of your argument if you admitted that the purger on the Heb 1:3 is Christ and not Purgatory based on your church’s officials interpretations? Are you trying to answer just for that sake of answering even though it doesnt support your stand?

Please, dont make a desperate move to defend your unbiblical doctrine. Defending your doctrine by citing an irrelevant verse to the topic doesnt help at all.

    • @Odan

Odan said that – “and I believe that’s how you understand my answer which says; “Purgatory is biblical. It comes from latin; Purgationem Peccatorum.””, hence, that is you answer, right?

      Reply:
If that is real, then please enlighten us that Purgatory comes from Purgationem Peccatorum.

Odan said that – “The souls in purgatory are prisoners because of their sins. In judgment Christ is in heaven.”

      Reply:
You are clearly stating that purgatory is a place. Where exactly you can find that in the Bible? Where is this purgatory? Is that place, the purgatory, the same that is written in Heb 1:3?

    • Odan Matig-a said

“The purging of sins by Christ are done twice; in this life and the afterlife”

Can you please cite a verse?

If you have noticed Mr Odan Matig-a, every time bro Eli answers he makes sure that it is biblical and backed up by verses of the scriptures. show us where in the bible can you read that Christ saves twice; here and in the afterlife.

    • Dude, are you okay? The word “purgatory” is not in the bible. You derived it from the word in the latin bible but it’s not in the bible. Your statement: says that. Don’t claim that it’s in the bible when it’s just one of your fairy tale inventions. After derivation, you conceptualized something out of it and poof! it became purgatory. The concept of purgatory is not biblical no matter how much you twist it. You cleanse your soul when you’re alive, not when you’re dead. You don’t cleanse dead souls whose sins are venial somewhere. Where in the bible can you find that!

You asked where is the catholic doctrine that defines purgatory as a place between heaven and hell? It is quoted in your doctrine that was shown: a middle state…. an intermediate state. In the middle of what? And don’t tell me it is not a place. As quoted above, “There is a purgatory, and SOULS THERE DETAINED…” Don’t say that he is manipulating when the only problem is you not understanding very well.

Don’t make yourself a laughing stock if you still have some sense of self-preservation. If you’re still in the denial stage of grieving, go to one of our Bible expo. Find our nearest locale. Tell the people there that you want to ask question or challenge Bro. Eli on a debate. And there you go.

In the meantime, find something worthwhile to do like researching IMPARTIALLY and reading the Bible. If you love truth, you’ll do that but if you just want to defend your doctrine no matter how wrong and crooked it is, oh well, live with your lies. I pity you, though.

    • you said in your reply clearly that “purgatory is biblical”. and that you mean that it is found in latin bible? which again clearly means purging our sins(in latin)..does purging our sins the same meaning with purgatory? purgatory is a name of place while purging our sins is an act..common even a grade one student can differentiate this clearly..you keep on digging more misleading thoughts..brother.. may the lord trul enlightened you.i am just an observer of comments in this blog.

  16. As long as Bro.Eli and Bro.Daniel is here, nobody can fool us with their unbiblical doctrines! Thanks be to God. To God be the glory forever.

  17. Bro.Eli’s method of reasoning can be categorized as a bible scholar’s,historian’s,logician’s.etc reasoning.I just dont know how would a Catholic defender would refute such excellent argumentations by Bro.Eli.

    • Ask those who died. They will tell you if there is, or there is no purgatory. I’ll tell you when I get there🙂 Stop arguing. Just wait for your turn, and you’ll see for yourself. Live your life with proper guidance from the people whom you trust and forget about those you don’t.

  18. if they going to delete the purgatory doctrine, just like they did in limbo, floods of donation for prayers for the dead souls will also be eliminated. Isn’t Money is the reason why purgatory was invented by catholic leaders?

this is the right time to wake up! dispose purgatory, dispose your religion!

  19. According to Ferdinand Blumentritt:

“Not only is Rizalthe most famous man of his own people, but the greatestman the Malayan race has produced.”

This is true until bro eli was born! This saying of blumentritt is not anymore applicable of our time because there is already someone surpasses far beyond rizal and that is bro eli and bro daniel!

Bro eli is not ONLY famous in his country but also famous worlwide ESP. to PASTORS and PRIEST. They know bro eli that is why they DONT have guts to face him in a debate. they were just good making gossips to defame bro eli.

And i personally believe that bro eli is not ONLY “the GREATEST of MALAYAN race” but he is the “GREATEST man in our generation”…

If any PASTORS disagree to this, try to debate him and lets see what you’ve got…

    To God be the Glory!!!!🙂

  23. Mr. Eli Soriano opined:

Take note that it is the Council of Trent of the Catholic Church, not the Bible, that asserted the doctrine of purgatory!

    Reply:

It is true that there was a Council of Trent… but first let us scrutinize why the pope called for a council.

In the 16th century Martin Luther, a rebel priest caused a disension in the Roman Church. He wanted his own heretical theological version on the bible. And from the dictate of his inner demons he wanted to remove those books from the canon that lent support to the orthodox doctrine of the Church. Removed in this way were books that supported such things as prayers for the dead (Tobit 12:12; 2 Maccabees 12:39-45), Purgatory (Wisdom 3:1-7), intercession of dead saints (2 Maccabees 15:14), and intercession of angels as intermediaries (Tobit 12:12-15).

    Mr. Eli Soriano opined:

The greatest of the Malayan race, Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal, in his famous book, Noli Me Tangere, said categorically after reading the whole Bible that there is no purgatory in the Bible! Mind you, Dr. Rizal speaks more than 22 languages. He surely is knowledgeable of Latin and Spanish. And he said purgatory is not in the Bible as Rizal is neither inane nor insane.

    Reply:

Rizal knew more his politics than the bible. And why do you believe the Noli of Rizal when you said that the truth is in the bible? Rizal’s idea that there is no purgatory in the bible comes from Martin Luther a priest turned heretics who wanted to teach the doctrine of sola scriptura.

    Mr. Eli Soriano opined:

The Catholic doctrine of purgatory is not founded on Biblical teachings. The alleged mention of praying for the dead in the book of Maccabeus, (this book is not part of the Bible until the Catholic Church included it in 1546) does not in any manner imply that there is a purgatory!

    Reply:

Purgatory is founded on biblical teaching. The Old Testament when it was translated into the Septuagint Version became the scriptures christians used. During Martin Luther’s rebellion he wanted to remove the books of Esther, Hebrews, James, Jude, Revelation I Maccabees and II Maccabees. There books of Tobit and II Maccabees support purgatory and the prayers for the dead. Because Luther is a rebel of the Church he wanted these books remove from the bible. Mr. Eli Soriano is a supporter of the idea of Martin Luther.

    Mr. Eli Soriano opined:

Praying for the dead was never a part of the Christian doctrine! The Lord Jesus Christ, or anyone of His apostles, never taught any idea of it!

    Reply:

Praying for the dead is a part of christian doctrine which is written in Tobit 12:12; 2 Maccabees 12:39-45. These books are removed in the Luther’s bible. These books were in the bible long before Martin Luther was born.

    Mr. Eli Soriano opined:

The word purgatory cannot be found in the writings of the apostles nor have the slightest idea of it!

    Reply:

Purgatory is a derive word from “purge”. The idea of purgatory was taught to the early christians since the books supporting purgatory and prayers for the dead was already in scriptures.

    Mr. Eli Soriano opined:

If Christians are to be purged from their sins, it has to be in this life and not in the hereafter. It is through the atoning power of the death of Christ that we are purged from our sins, not in purgatory.

    Reply:

The purging of our sins was done by Jesus himself on the cross and the hereafter during the resurrection of the dead.

    Mr. Eli Soriano opined:

The sufferings of Christ and the offering of His body is sufficient to purge our sins!

    Reply:

And also the purging of sins of those souls in purgatory when Christ sat in his throne in heaven.

  24. Purgatory is a money making business scheme by the Roman Catholic Church.

By teaching this doctrine that dead loved ones are in purgatory for their sins committed while they were alive in this world, the Roman Catholic Church charged fees so souls impounded in “Purgatory” will have their stay there shortened. This is called indulgence or “indulgencia” during the Spanish colonial times.

A proof of this is the many prime lands that the Roman Catholic Church possesses here in the Philippines. They have lands in city centers where they have their cathedrals and even in mountains where they have their retreat houses and monasteries.

They have acquired these lands by using the indulgencia money to buy them also many brainwashed Filipino natives had their lands donated to the Catholic Church so their loved ones can get out of purgatory.

The doctrine of purgatory is very much like the culture of corruption which is present everywhere this time. Imagine those who have the money can easily get out of punishment or lessen it because of “Payola.” My goodness can God be paid with money?

Also the beatification and canonization of “Saints” is very much like the “Backer System” that we have now. If you have many “Backers” in the Vatican, you can have your Saint.

Towns, baranggays, sitios have their backers, “their patron saints” to protect them.

  25. @Odan Matig-a, and your point is? Let’s get back to the first question that you posted:

“Does the Latin term “purgationem peccatorum” mean purgatory?”

Is the translation “purged our sins” (an act) equal to “purgatory” (a place, as defined by Catholic teachings)?

You wouldn’t even find the word “purgatory” in the English bible. Trying to teach a doctrine which isn’t even written in the Bible COULD IMPLY something wrong with how the Catholic authorities interpret what is actually written.

  26. Haha I think purgatory is the purged of money and not the purge of sins. Taking away the money of the people but not their sins.

  27. Peace be unto you Brother Eli,

We all know the history of the Church and the believers of Christ has gone to the most dramatic and chaotic experiences throughout the ages that lead to the formation of groups that is happening right now. And we have proven this in the scriptures for it is already been said that many will be misled but still, we seek for the whole truth. Our Church Forefathers are now dead far too long to explain us our queries only having the Bible to be our sole guide for life. Do you believe these points of faith that we believers have argued and debated for too long will still come to an end? How can we answer for the schism that happened to the Church built by our Lord Jesus Christ in his coming day? Will we, believers still live in a common faith that promotes from what Jesus taught us? After all he said that “For he that is not against us is on our part.” Thank you for the insights Brother Eli, May the Holy Spirit guide you all throughout.

  28. We should acknowledge and asks forgiveness to God for each of our sins. We should also atone and repair for them. It is like a person who let say “breaks a glass window of their neighbor’s house”. The owner of the house will forgive that person but the person needs to pay for the damage he has done. That is the same thing with our sin. If we have not completely atoned for it in this life, God in His Mercy is giving us a chance in the afterlife.

“Be perfect as our Father is perfect”, that is what Jesus wants from all of us. It may be improper for Him to say “There is Purgatory, you can still die on earth not perfect because you will still be purified there”. That is not what Jesus wants. He wants all of us to be perfect right here on earth if possible!!! But out of His Mercy and Love for us, if we die not perfect but with Faith and Grace, He is giving us this second chance.

Are we not happy that God in His mercy are allowing people who died in His grace but not perfectly fit for Heaven to have a place to purify them of their stains? Are we not happy that God is giving “Purgatory” because He is Merciful?

Satan hates God’s Mercy because that Mercy was not given to him because he rejects it. Are we rejecting this Mercy from God?

“Purgatory” whether it is in the Bible or not, are we not happy that there is???? Are you really sure you will die perfectly??? Can you say to yourself that if you die now, you are perfect?

    GOD BLESS US ALL!!

    • to Jlocute,

Why you should embrace a doctrine that cannot be found in the Bible? Everything that we need to do to attain salvation is written in the Bible, so what is the reason of defending a place like purgatory to clean your sins? If you want to be sinless/perfect in eyes of God, follow His instructions, all is written in the Scripture. Listen to His messenger, that speaks His words and not from himself. Why base your faith in very baseless doctrine?

God is merciful indeed, but His anger is for those who follow the father of lies intentionally and wholeheartedly. John 8:44

I hope you give yourself time to spend in listening to Bro. Eli Soriano who is patiently teaches the words of God without blemish.
